Hey guys,
I’m a 14 year old trans* guy living in Canada. (:
I just got my binder (yay), and my next step is my name.
The thing is, I went through a lot of names I liked, but I find my given name hard to give up and at the same time possibly ok to keep.
Kim.
So, I needed to ask, Is Kim good enough? I know it’s a gender-neutral name, which fits my identification of genderqueer or fluid, but still. On days that I feel like a guy, is Kim suitable? Have you ever met any guys named Kim?
I feel that I won’t pass if they know my name. :C

Thanks so much.

I think passing is equal parts perception and attitude on your part. It’s a difficult issue, because you could change your name to something pretty masculine like William or Eric, and if you don’t look the part, people might still misgender you. Then again, I know a guy named Lauren who never has issues in person with misgendering.

This might not be the majority’s opinion, but if you like the name Kim, keep it. I’m having such difficulty in my situation because my birth name is very feminine. I’ve never seen a guy called it, but I like it. I’ve honestly been trying to balance my own personal preferences with the reality that if I keep it I am going to be misgendered 99.9% of the time by people who don’t know me. Ultimately, I changed it to a variation of my middle name and my Hebrew name (but when I officially file for a name change, I’ll be keeping my first name as my new middle name, gender connotations be damned).

For what it’s worth, I think Kim is a boss name for a guy.

Also, congrats on the binder. Putting it on for the first time is the best feeling in the world, IMO. Or one of them anyway.
